Netvinir (“we”, “our”, “us”) operates the Netvinir mobile application (the “App”) and the website https://netvinir.is (the “Site”).

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect information when you use our App or Site.
By using Netvinir, you agree to this Privacy Policy.

Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect basic information such as your name, email address, and user role (child, parent, teacher, or administrator).
This data is linked to your identity and used solely for authentication and app functionality.

Messages and Channels

Netvinir is a secure chat platform.

  • Chat messages, channel memberships, and related metadata are temporarily stored on secure Supabase servers for up to 28 days to enable app functionality.
  • Messages are then automatically deleted.
  • We do not scan, sell, or use chat content for advertising or analytics.

Identifiers

Each user is assigned a User ID to enable secure login, manage connections, and deliver chat functionality.
This identifier is linked to the user account but is not shared with any third parties.

Device Information

We may collect limited technical data (such as device type, operating system, app version, and language settings) to ensure compatibility and performance.
This information is anonymous and cannot be used to identify you.

Website Data

Our website may use basic cookies for login sessions and remembering preferences.
We do not use cookies for marketing or behavioral tracking.

If you submit a contact form, we collect your name, email, and message solely to respond to your inquiry.

How We Use Information

We use collected information to:

  • Provide and maintain core functionality of the App and Site
  • Authenticate users and maintain account security
  • Facilitate verified communication between children, parents, and teachers
  • Prevent fraud, misuse, or unauthorized access
  • Improve performance, usability, and reliability

We never use data for targeted advertising, commercial profiling, or third-party marketing.

Data Retention

  • Chat messages and related content are automatically deleted after 14 days.
  • Deleted user accounts are permanently erased within 30 days of a deletion request.
  • System logs and diagnostic data may be retained for up to 90 days for security and performance monitoring.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access, correct, or delete your personal data
  • Withdraw consent for optional data processing at any time
  • Request export of your data in a machine-readable format
  • Request deletion of your child’s account (if applicable)

Children’s Privacy

Netvinir is built for safe use by children and families.
We follow GDPR and COPPA guidelines:

  • Children can only join verified family or school groups.
  • The App collects only minimal data necessary for operation.
  • No advertising, tracking, or location data is collected.
  • Parents or guardians can request access to or deletion of their child’s data at any time.
  • We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13 without verified parental consent.

Data Security

All communication is encrypted in transit and stored securely in accordance with GDPR-compliant standards.
Access to data is restricted to authorized personnel under strict confidentiality and audit controls.

Third-Party Services

Netvinir uses trusted service providers for hosting and authentication, including:

  • Supabase (database and authentication)
  • Google Firebase (optional infrastructure and analytics)

These providers are GDPR-compliant and act solely as data processors on our behalf.
No data is shared with advertisers or external marketing platforms.

Privacy Policy Addendum: Account Deletion & Optional Data

Account Deletion

You can permanently delete your account anytime in the app:
Settings → Delete Account → confirm deletion.

After deletion:

  • Your profile and related data are permanently erased.
  • You are signed out and returned to the login screen.

Optional Data

Only name and email are required to use the app.
The following fields are optional and can be added or removed at any time:

  • National ID (Kennitala) — used for verified matching within family or school groups.
  • Phone Number — used only for optional SMS verification and recovery.

Optional data is never required to use the main chat features.

Data Retention After Deletion

When you delete your account:

  • Profile, messages, and memberships are removed or anonymized.
  • Minimal data may be retained temporarily for legal or safety purposes, but is securely restricted and deleted as soon as possible.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time.
The most recent version will always be available at https://netvinir.is/en/privacy.
Continued use of the App after an update means acceptance of the revised terms.
